What's in a green fee
Thailand does golf a little differently from the West. Here’s what’s usually bundled into the price — and the one thing first-timers always ask about.

About caddies — the thing first-timers don't expect
On almost every Phuket course a caddie is mandatory, and it’s one of the best parts of golf here. They read greens, judge distances, find your ball and keep pace — most speak enough English to help. The caddie fee is often in the green fee, but a cash tip is expected on top (commonly around 300–500 THB for 18 holes, more if they’re excellent). Bring small notes — tips are paid directly to your caddie, not at the counter.

Phuket golf history
Golf reached Thailand in 1905 at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club; the first 18-hole course, Royal Hua Hin, opened in 1924. Phuket’s scene arrived later, riding the island’s tourism boom — and built on reclaimed mining land.
Phuket Country Club opens
The island’s first international-standard course (par 72, ~6,484 yards) on a reclaimed tin mine. Host to the Ladies Kosaido Thailand Open (1992), Phuket Thailand Masters (2005), Phuket Asian Senior Masters (2006, 2008) and the Toyota Senior Championship (2022).
Blue Canyon arrives fact-corrected
The Canyon Course opens in 1991, the Lakes Course in 1999, across a 730-acre former tin-mine site. The Canyon hosted the Johnnie Walker Classic in 1994 and 1998 — the year Tiger Woods stormed back over the final round to win, driving the green on the par-4 13th, the hole later nicknamed “The Tiger Hole.”
Loch Palm Golf Club
Opens on 160 acres around Crystal Lake (18 holes, par 72) — the calm, palm-framed counterpoint to the canyon courses.
Red Mountain Golf Club was 2002 → 2007
Opens on a 1,400-rai former tin mine (18 holes, par 72, 6,781 yards). Named Asia’s best new course of its year; the signature 17th plays down a roughly 150-foot drop.
Laguna reborn · Mission Hills
Laguna Phuket (1987 origins) reopens after a full redesign (par 71). Mission Hills Phuket — a Jack Nicklaus design — adds 18 more holes and hosts regional events.
The sustainable-golf push

Cool & dry — peak
The driest, most comfortable months and the busiest. Best course conditions, but highest green fees and tee times go fast — book ahead.
High seasonHot & dry — shoulder
Hot and humid, especially midday. Tee off early or late. Courses are quieter and rates ease off — good value if you handle the heat.
ShoulderGreen season — value
Lush and cheapest, with showers that usually pass quickly rather than wash out a day. Most flexible time to grab deals and empty fairways.
Best valueThe Phuket sun is no joke — protect yourself
You’re playing roughly 8 degrees north of the equator, where the tropical sun is intense year-round, even when it’s cloudy or during the green season. A round is 4+ hours of direct exposure. Wear a high-SPF, sweat-resistant sunscreen and reapply at the turn, bring a hat and UV sunglasses, use the cart’s shade and the on-course rest stops, and drink water on every hole — heat and dehydration creep up fast. Tee off early morning or late afternoon in the hot months (Mar–May) to dodge the midday peak.

Mission Hills is one of the most unique golf experiences in Phuket. It’s the only course on the island with real ocean views from several holes, and the layout has a completely different coastal style compared to the other courses here. The driving range is great for a warm-up, and the attached resort gives the whole place a very relaxed, holiday feel. It’s also close to the airport, which makes it perfect for a short golf….
Compared to other clubs we have played with in Phuket, Bangkok and Hua Hin, I truly enjoyed my experience here in Blue Canyon Country Club. We played both Canyon and Lake courses. Caddies are very good. I had the best caddy (#111 – Ying) who guided and gave me feedback to help improve my game. Her experience and respectful way around the course made the game so smooth. I had a lot of fun and hope to come back again.
